Edward Staples was born in Cheltenham. A printer by occupation, he ran away from home aged 16 years and attested for the Army Hospital Corps at Westminster on 24 May 1873, giving his age as 18. In his very long military career, spanning nearly 23 years, his overseas service was restricted to Cyprus, August-September 1882 and Egypt, September-December 1882. Never rising beyond the rank of 1st Class Orderly (Lance-Corporal), he served in a variety of hospitals in England and Ireland. On 24 July 1894 he was given special permission to prolong his service beyond 21 years and was discharged in Chester on 25 March 1896. He received two ‘Good Conduct’ pay awards and a bronze medal for ‘Civic Services from the Liverpool Corporation’. Edward Staples died in Liverpool on 15 December 1939 and his address was 110 Ince Avenue, Liverpool. At the time he was an ‘Out-Patient’ of the Royal Hospital.

Sold with copied service papers and death certificate and original sepia photograph of the recipient.
