Edmund Bulteel Hawker was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment on 30 January 1884. He is confirmed as serving with the regiment in the Burma Expedition during 1886-87 and in the Hazara Campaign of 1888.

Promoted to Captain on 26 October 1892, he was on the Retired List in 1897.
