John Lampen joined the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in Morar, Bengal on 1 August 1879, in preparation for joining the Indian Army. This he successfully did on 20 August 1880, was appointed to the Staff Corps and joined the 5th Bengal Native Infantry stationed in Danapore. He passed Staff College, with a special mention in ‘Topography’ and qualified at the Indian School of Musketry. In 1881 he took part in the Mahsood Wazeeree Expedition. On 1 July 1882 he was appointed Adjutant. He served with the 5th Bengal N.I. in the Burma campaigns. Advanced to Captain on 18 August 1890, he was promoted to Wing Commander on 21 May 1892. He was promoted to Major on 13 August 1899 and Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 February 1905, becoming Commandant of the 2nd Queen’s Own Rajput Light Infantry. Lampen received the Brevet of Colonel on 13 February 1908 and retired from the service on 13 February 1910.
