George Simpson was born on 1 July and baptised on 27 July 1845 at Forres, Elgin. He was educated at the High School and the Scottish Institute, Edinburgh. Nominated for a Cadet in the Bombay Infantry in May 1861, he was commissioned as an Ensign on 27 November 1861. Arriving in India in December 1861, he was posted to the 109th Bombay Native Infantry. On 11 April 1864 he was promoted to Lieutenant and on 27 November 1873 advanced to Captain. On 14 April 1877 he transferred to the Madras Staff Corps and with a reduced rank was posted to the 11th Madras Infantry. Promoted back to Captain on 14 April 1881, he was advanced to Major on 14 April 1883. On 30 July 1887 he joined the Burma Expeditionary Force as an Assistant in the Accounting General’s Department, for which services he was mentioned in despatches on 2 September 1887 and awarded the Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel on 27 November 1887 - the twin ranks being recorded on his medal. Simpson was promoted to Colonel on 17 May 1890 and in June 1892 was given command of the 7th Madras Infantry. He returned to the Staff in November 1893, being appointed Deputy Quartermaster General at Army H.Q. at Madras. On 20 April 1894 he was appointed Quartermaster General and on 22 June 1897 was awarded the C.B. He retired as a Major-General on 8 May 1906. Retiring to Ootacamund, he died there on 18 June 1908.
