M.I.D. London Gazette 24 January 1917 & 6 July 1918.

William Barnard Lauder was born on 26 June 1864. After attending Sandhurst he entered the Devonshire Regiment as a Lieutenant on 10 November 1886. With the regiment he served in Burma during 1889-92. After serving in the Ordnance Store Department, 1894-96, he transferred to the Army Pay Department in June 1896, becoming Paymaster at Portsmouth. He was promoted to Major and Staff Paymaster in November 1903 and Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1908. On the outbreak of war, he was still Lieutenant-Colonel Staff Paymaster but in February 1915 he was promoted to Brevet Colonel and was appointed to Chief Paymaster based at Hounslow. In January 1918 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel. He did not qualify for any of the Great War medals but for his services during the war he was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the C.M.G. On 28 October 1918 he was appointed Inspector of the Army Pay Offices and on 2 October 1919 he became Chief Paymaster at the War Office in Charge of Records for the newly formed Royal Army Pay Corps. He retired from the service in 1924. Sold with copied research.
