Charles Fleetwood-Shawe was born in Ballainjn, India on 1 August 1832. On 13 March 1852 he purchased his commission as a Cornet in the 4th Dragoon Guards and on 11 October 1853 purchased the rank of Lieutenant in the regiment. In July 1854 he sailed with the regiment to the Crimea. There, he was present at the battle of Tchernaya, 16 August 1855 and was present during the latter part of the siege and capture of Sebastopol. For his services in the campaign he was awarded the Crimea Medal with clasp for Sebastopol and Turkish Crimea Medal. Returning to England he purchased the rank of Captain on 20 March 1857. In June 1858 he exchanged to the 40th Regiment. With the regiment Fleetwood-Shawe served in the Maori War of 1860-61. Sold with some copied research, including a copied photograph of Fleetwood-Shawe and others near Razorback Hill on the road to Waikato, c.1861 (original held by the Alexander Turnbull Library, New Zealand).
