James Buckler was born in the village of Thornford, Dorset. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 1st Battalion 95th Regiment on 29 August 1807. Serving throughout the Peninsula campaign, he was present at the battles of Vimiera, Corunna, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Vittoria and St. Sebastian. In the Waterloo campaign he served in Captain William Johnson’s Company, 1st Battalion 95th Regiment. Heavily involved at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, the Battalion suffered 28 killed and 190 wounded. Doubtless worn out by his years of service, Buckler was discharged in January 1817, aged 35 years, as ‘weakly’. He died on 19 April 1839.
