John Hackman was born in Godalming, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 51st Foot on 4 April 1809, aged 22 years. He was promoted to Corporal on 17 July 1813 and Sergeant on 16 July 1815. With the 51st Foot he served in the Walcheren campaign, July-October 1809, and was present at the siege of Flushing. In the Peninsula he was present at the battle of Fuentes d’Onor, the siege of Fort St. Christoval, the battle of Salamanca, the capture of Madrid, the battle of Vittoria, actions in the Pyrenees and the battles of Nivelle and Orthes. In the Waterloo campaign, Hackman served in Captain J. H. Phelp’s Company, 51st Foot. The regiment formed part of Colonel Mitchell’s 4th British Brigade - the only brigade from General Colville’s 4th Division to actually see action at Waterloo. In the battle the regiment suffered 11 killed and 31 wounded. Sergeant Hackman claimed his discharge on 14 November 1829.

Sold with copied discharge papers. Clasps confirmed.
