Algernon Ward was a Sizar of Christ Christ College Cambridge and gained a B.A. in Theology and a Master’s Theology Prize in 1890. After attending the Cambridge Clerical Training School in 1891 he was ordained a Deacon in 1892 and Priest in 1893 and served as a Curate at St. Michael’s, Coventry during 1892-94 and of St. Augustine’s, Edgbaston during 1894-1902. Additionally he was a Lecturer in Theology at Queen’s College, Birmingham, 1898-1902 and Tutor and Sub-Warden, 1899-1902. After gaining an M.A. in Theology at the University of Durham in 1904, he was appointed an Honorary Canon of Jerusalem, 1904-07; Chaplain of All Saints, Ramleh, 1904-06; Chaplain of the Forces, Alexandria, 1906 and Chaplain of St. Mark’s, Alexandria, 1902-15. During 1907-15 he was Archdeacon of the Church of England in Egypt and a Commissioner for Egypt. Again in Egypt, he was appointed a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 1914-15. He returned to England in 1915 to take up the living as Vicar of Sturminster Newton, 1915-22 and was Rural Dean during 1917-22. He then moved to become Vicar of Stowe in Shropshire, 1922-26 and thence Rector of Church Lawford and Vicar of King’s Newnham, 1926-36. He was then appointed the Rural Dean of Rugby, 1929-36 and an Honorary Canon of Coventry Cathedral, 1933-36. In 1936 he was inducted as Rector of Hampton Lucy in Warwickshire and in the same year was appointed Archdeacon of Warwick. In 1945 he retired from his benefice and was appointed Canon Emeritus of Coventry Cathedral. Retiring to Paignton, he died on 9 July 1947 and was buried in Paignton Cemetery. He was the author of several religious works. Sold with copied m.i.c. and other research.
