Lanark Mills, Charles IV, Spanish Dollar, 1799 F M, countermarked payable at lanark mills in a circular indent and stamped 5/ incuse in centre (Davis 83; Sb. ST 66; cf. SCA 34 (Walter Allen) 60-70. Coin about fine, countermark very fine, cleaned (£140-180)

The footnote in SCA 34 states 92 recorded examples of the 5/ countermark, 14 in institutional collections. See footnote (lot 54), for a brief account of the mill, which was mainly owned from 1797 by the radical reformer, Robert Owen.
