Harold Summersgill was born in Heywood, Lancashire, in 1891 and attested for the Royal Army Medical Corps at Manchester on 27 February 1912. He served with the R.A.M.C. as part of the British Expeditionary Force during the Great War on the Western Front from 28 February 1917 to 15 May 1919, and for his services was awarded an Immediate Meritorious Service Medal. He was demobilised on 3 July 1919, and was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal per Army Order 148 of April 1920.
