Sergeant G.B. Bates was a Navigator with 75 (New Zealand) Squadron from July 1943. Flying Stirling bombers he took part in 25 night bombing operations. These included the famous raid on the V1 rocket site at Peenemunde on 17 August 1943. Other entries in his log book show that he was attacked by JU88's over Hamburg and Mannheim, the pilot and mid-upper gunner being wounded on the latter occasion, and his aircraft was damaged by flak on two occasions. After completing various training courses Bates joined 12 Squadron and flew three further operations in Lancasters, including the attack on Hitler's mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden.
