Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Fifth issue, Threepence, 1582/1, mm. Latin cross (?) on obv., sword on rev., bust 4D, 1.52g/6h (N 1998; S 2573). Very fine but some light double striking, very rare £150-£200

The obverse mintmark and overdate on this coin are both open to interpretation. DNW Archives lists only one such overdate on a Threepence and that is given as 1582/1/0 {DNW 82/187 part); unfortunately there is no image. Sixpences are more numerous, including specimens in the Bole, Cattermole and Wilkinson collections, one of which has an unaltered mm. Latin cross on obverse (DNW 92/342 part).
