John B. Howard was appointed to a commission as Second Lieutenant in the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment on 6 March 1895 (Regimental District No. 33, Halifax). He was advanced Captain on 25 July 1899 and Major some time thereafter.
