Thomas Walter Bartlam was born in Ironbridge, Shropshire, on 13 February 1881. He joined the Ironbridge Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and served in South Africa during the Boer War. He later attested into the Royal Army Medical Corps for service during the Great War and was appointed Staff Sergeant. He died in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, aged 79, on 11 January 1960.
