Percy H. Carloss was born in Battersea, London, on 1 April 1894. He joined the Royal Field Artillery at Chelsea Town Hall on 7 November 1914, and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 5 September 1915 with ‘A’ Battery, 100th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Transferred to Salonika on 13 December 1915, he service was marred by stomach complaints which necessitated evacuation to Malta. Sent home, he recovered sufficiently to witness further service with the Army Service Corps in Ireland and Royal Horse Artillery in Egypt, before discharge on 19 July 1919.
