Late 13th century, bronze seal matrix, pointed oval, 27mm x 17mm, St Catherine standing, holding a wheel in her right hand and pointing to it with her left hand, priest kneeling before her in prayer, reads s’thome de: whyten (seal of Thomas Whyten). Very fine with a green patina £160-£200
found in Anstey, Hertfordshire, September 2017 (PAS BH-157CA6)
The name Whyten or Whitton dates back to the Norman period, and means ‘a white farmstead’. Thomas Whyten is recorded as a priest at Bridlington priory in 1308.
