José Joaquim Fernandes (1907-62); the hospital bearing his name was opened in 25 October 1970 by the then President of the Republic, Admiral Américo Thomaz Rodrigues God, and partly financed by Fernandes’ widow, D. Carolina Almodovar Fernandes (1913-2009).
