James Clark was born in Glasgow, Scotland in February 1879. He enlisted in the Royal Marines at Greenock in February 1898. Clark served during the Great War in 1914 with the Royal Marine Brigade initially at Ostend, 26 August to 1 September. He was then at Dunkirk from 19 September, and was employed in the Defence of Antwerp, where he was taken prisoner of war.
