John Day was born in 1843 at Good Hope, Jamaica, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. St. Vincent on 23 November 1857. As Captain of the Fore Top, H.M.S. Himalaya he extended his service for a further period of 10 years on 1 May 1861. He remained in naval service and was appointed Petty Officer First Class, H.M.S. Malabar, on 1 January 1873. He was appointed as Boatman to H.M.S. Hector in the Coast Guard Service on 5 February 1875 and was subsequently appointed Commissioned Boatman in August 1878, serving at Coast Guard Stations at Ventnor, Milford and Barton Cliff. He was shore pensioned in July 1882.
