He served during the Second World War with the 6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in North Africa and Italy, and was twice Mentioned in Despatches, a scarce achievement for an Infantry N.C.O. Returning to the Police following the cessation of hostilities, he was awarded his Police Long Service Medal whilst serving as a Sergeant with the British Transport Police.
