Horatio Powys Lane was born on 6 January 1836, and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Madras Artillery on 8 July 1855l 1st Lieutenant, 27 August 1858; Captain, 7 January 1865; Major, 5 July 1872; Lieutenant-Colonel, 1 October 1877; Colonel, 1 October 1881. He served in the Central Indian campaign from July 1857 to May 1859, and was present at the affairs of Moorwarrah and Budgaum, and at the attack of Konah Pass (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Colonel Lane died on 9 March 1884, on board the Cathay en route to England.
