Frederick Victor Butcher was born at Worthing Sussex, on 28 March 1897, and joined the Royal Navy on 14 August 1912. During the Great War he served aboard H.M. Ships Achilles and Royal Sovereign. He was drafted to the Royal Australian Navy on a 2-year agreement from May 1928, serving aboard H.M.A.S. Australia and receiving his L.S. & G.C. medal during this period.
