Thomas Pearn was born in Lewannick, Cornwall in June 1877. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1893, and advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class in May 1905. Service included in H.M. Ships Dartmouth, September 1913 - June 1915, and the City of London (armed merchant cruiser), March 1916 - November 1919.
