John Hunter was born in Clackmannashire, Scotland in March 1892. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1915, and advanced to Stoker 1st Class in November 1916. Service included with H.M.S. Royal Sovereign (battleship), April - June 1916, and H.M.S. Renown (battlecruiser), 1916 - 1917. Hunter was ‘Invalided’ out of service, 6 July 1917.
