Bert Nichols was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire in January 1893. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1911, and advanced to a Leading Stoker in September 1918. Nichols served with H.M.S. Archer (destroyer), December 1913 - May 1916, during which she served as part of the Harwich Force. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve in February 1920.
