Philip Sidney Carden, a native of Brighton, served with the Sussex Yeomanry and was awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal per Army Order 107 of April 1912. Following the outbreak of the Great War he was commissioned into the Army Service Corps on 17 September 1914, and as a Temporary Captain he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 29 May 1917).
