Charles George Hobbs was born at Holloway, London, on 11 October 1893 and commenced his naval service as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. Impregnable on 18 June 1910. He was paid a war gratuity when serving in H.M.S. Sandhurst (Winchelsea), and was advanced to Petty Officer in H.M.S. Columbine in September 1920. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1926, and was shore pensioned in October 1933. Recalled for War service in March 1940, he was finally shore discharged from H.M.S. Collingwood in August 1945.
