Henry John Gregory was born at Ermington, Devon on 27 August 1891 and commenced his naval service as a Stoker 2nd Class on 22 November 1910. He served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Lion, and was present in her during the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1925. He was shore pensioned in November 1932, but was recalled for service on 29 August 1939, as Pensioned Chief Stoker, and went on to serve in H.M.S. Rooke. He was invalided out of the service on 18 July 1945.
