David Alexander Cumming was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and having emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Valcartier on 24 September 1914. He served with the 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 26 September 1916. He is buried in Courcelette British Cemetery, France.
