19th Century: Cornwall, Scorrier House, J. Williams, mule Penny, 1812, view of the mine, reverse bust of George III, STAFFORDSHIRE PENNY TOKEN, edge centre-grained right, 18.42gm (Mayne/Williams 6; Watkin 16; D. Staffs. 24). Obverse blotchy, otherwise fine and clear, very rare (£80-100)
Although Mayne and Williams, writing in 1985 (p.55) state that this type “has only recently been noted and so far only two copies have come to light,” the truth is that the existence of these mules has long been known and several specimens exist (i.e. Cruttwell, in lot 611)
