Arthur William Denton was born at Hull, Yorkshire, on 24 July 1880, and joined the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 4 July 1896, aged 16, and was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on his 18th birthday. He joined Linnet whilst still a Boy 2nd Class on 1 November 1897, and remained in her until 17 July 1901, having been advanced to Able Seaman in January of that year. His later service was marred by 3 days in cells in July 1901 but, more seriously, a period of 90 days hard labour for ‘attempting to strike a superior officer’ in March 1903. He was reclassified as a Stoker 2nd Class in December 1905, advanced to Stoker 1st Class in August 1907, and left the service on completion of his engagement in July 1910 when his ship, H.M.S. Encounter was in Sydney, Australia. Sold with copied record of service, this being his only medal entitlement.
