1914 Star, with clasp (L-14585 Pte. C. S. Eggleton. 4/Midd’x R.) very fine £70-£90
Charles Sidney Eggleton was born in Edmonton, Middelsex. He served during the Great War with the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment in the French theatre of war from 31 August 1914. Eggleton was killed in action on the Western Front, 16 September 1914. The Battalion War Diary gives the following for the latter date:
‘Battalion arrived at Bois Marin at 1am, slept on the road and took up its position of concealment in the wood at dawn. Occupied line at edge of wood at dusk. Artillery duel proceeding.’
Private Eggleton is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
