Edward Thorold Garland was a partner in the auctioneers Oakden and Garland, with premises in Eastbourne and Bexhill-on-Sea prior to the Great War. After that business dissolved he moved to London and set up another auctioneers in Harringay. Garland was commissioned Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in February 1915. He served during the Great War with the Royal Engineers in the French theatre of war from 18 November 1915, and advanced to Temporary Major in December 1916.

In 1913 Garland had been elected as a Member for the High Cross Ward of the Tottenham Urban District Council, and after the war he set up Garlands Auctioneers at 695 Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham. Garland was appointed a Justice of the Peace and resided at 191 Northumberland Park, Tottenham.
