Joseph Palmer served during the Great War as a Chief Petty Officer with H.M.S. Genista, a minesweeping sloop which was launched 26 February 1916. He was killed in action, along with 72 other crew members, when she was sunk by the German U-57 in the Atlantic, west of Ireland, 23 October 1916.
Chief Petter Officer Palmer is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
