Robert Bell was born in North Shields, Northumberland, on 4 January 1907, and attested originally for the Royal Engineers at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 14 June 1926. He served with the 3rd (Prince of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) during the Second Wold War, and was discharged on 20 July 1944. He died at Wallsend, Northumberland, on 28 June 1979.
