Victor Osborn served in the Welsh Guards during the Great War, before transferring to the Royal Air Force, in February 1919, as Batman to H.R.H. Prince Albert (afterwards Duke of York and ultimately King George VI). He was demobilised in October 1919 but continued to serve as valet to the Duke of York until 30 September 1934, when he left Royal service. He was awarded the R.V.M. on 27 December 1928, in connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Australia and New Zealand.
