The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, C.B. (Military) Companion’s breast badge, 22 carat gold and enamels, hallmarked London 1843?, maker’s mark ‘WN’ for William Neale, fitted with later wide silver-gilt straight swivel suspension, lacking ribbon buckle, in its R & S. Garrard & Co. fitted case of issue, the case scuffed, the badge with a few minor enamel chips, otherwise nearly extremely fine £1400-1800
Sold with some contemporary notes and two newspaper obituary notices for Major-General Charles Waddington, Bombay Engineers (1796-1858). Waddington was commanding engineer in the Scinde and A.D.C. to Sir Charles Napier at the battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad. For his services in that campaign he was several times mentioned in despatches for his gallantry, and received the Companionship of the Order of the Bath and Brevet rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. In September 1858 he was compelled by ill-health to leave India, and he died in London on 22 November of that year.
