D.C.M. recommendation submitted to the King on 18 April 1901, and announced in the London Gazette 19 April 1901. Private J. Royle was killed in action at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900. Details recommending the award of the D.C.M. were published in the London Gazette 8 February 1901: ‘4761 Private J. Royle, 24th January, Spion Kop, ammunition carrier - conspicuous gallantry in carrying several wounded men from the firing line.’ Seven posthumous awards of the D.C.M. are known to have been made during the Boer War.
