William Ogilvie was born in Cupar, Fifeshire, in 1876 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Ayr on 3 January 1900. He served with the 17th (Ayrshire) Company, 6th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 February 1900 to 28 May 1901, and was present during the operations at Wittebergen, 1-29 July 1900. He was discharged on 18 June 1901, after 1 year and 167 days’ service.
