Alfred William Eaglestone was born in Dartford, Kent, on 9 September 1898, and attested for the Rifle Brigade on 8 September 1916. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 1917, and suffered a gun shot wound to the left leg and right thigh on 24 August 1918. He was admitted to the Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Taplow, Buckinghamshire, on 18 September 1918.
