Wyon, frontal elevation of the school building [from the 1834 Foundation medal], rev. arms of Warren Stormes Hale, 58mm, 74.57g (BHM 1680 obv.; E 1279 obv.; Taylor 120a obv.; D & W 245/328 obv.). Small obverse rim bruise at 10 o’clock, otherwise about extremely fine, toned £50-70

Warren Stormes Hale (1791-1872), founder of the City of London School in Queen Victoria street; orphaned at a young age, he became an apprenticed chandler in 1804 and was twice Master of the Tallow Chandlers’ Company, in 1849 and 1851. He was appointed an alderman in 1856, sheriff in 1858 and served as Lord Mayor of London, 1864-5; he lived in West Heath, Hampstead
