Matthews Chambers was born at Clontarf, Dublin in 1881, and attested for the Leinster Regiment at Dublin on 11 December 1899, having previously served in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He served in South Africa, Mauritius and India and with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 December 1914 until 26 November 1915, when his Battalion moved to Salonica. He transferred to the 82nd Company, Machine Gun Corps on 21 May 1916. Returning home on 10 May 1918 he was discharged on 22 December 1920.
