18th Century Tokens, Co DUBLIN, Dublin, Samuel Cooley, Halfpenny, standing figure of Hope, ship at sea in background, rev. bee-hive and bees on shield flanked by spades, crown above, edge plain, 10.04g/6h (DH 306a, the plate piece). Slightly off-centre and with striking split, otherwise good fine, of the highest rarity; no other specimens traced by the cataloguer £300-400
As neither Hamer not Dalton possessed an example of this great rarity, it is postulated that the token was once owned by F.S. Cokayne; if this assumption is correct, it would appear that Cokayne’s original tickets do not seem to have survived
