William Edward Fanning was born in Oldham, Lancashire, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Ashton-under-Lyne. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 26 August 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on la Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.
