Oliver George Harbord was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1870, and attested there for the Royal Field Artillery on 14 May 1888. Advanced Sergeant on 16 December 1899, he served with the Artillery in South Africa from 23 October 1899 to 23 April 1901, and was discharged on 13 May 1901 after 13 years’ service. He re-enlisted on the outbreak of the Great War on 24 October 1914, and served with the R.F.A. on the Western Front from 1916 (entitled to British War and Victory Medals). He transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 25 February 1919.
