James Herbert Freme was Commissioned Ensign in the 79th Highlanders in October 1849, and was promoted Lieutenant in March 1854. He served with the Regiment in the Crimea, and was promoted Captain in December 1854. Invalided home, he was presented with his Crimea Medal by H.M. Queen Victoria in person on Horse Guards Parade on 20 May 1855 (Regimental History refers), prior to retiring in 1856. He was subsequently appointed a Member of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, and died at Ramsgate, Kent, on 9 November 1897.
