Fritz Kjelland, a Norwegian from Christiania (now Oslo) was awarded the Danish Medal for Saving Life from Drowning for saving a Swedish hotel owner named Mr. Hansson, of Eksjø from drowning at Hornbæk, North Zealand, on 9 July 1911 (Danish State Gazette No. 217, 16 December 1916 refers).
Approximately 121 silver medals for wearing were awarded during the reign of Frederick VIII. A further 69 awards were made but these were not granted permission to be worn and were issued without the suspension ring.
