Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, V.R., large, bronze (James Beattie Wreck of the S.S. “Gannet” on the 14th February 1882) heavy edge bruising, nearly very fine £200-240
James Beattie, Commissioned Boatman of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, Blatchington, Sussex, together with Commissioned Boatman M. G. Hazle, also of Blatchington, were awarded the Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea for the rescue of the crew of the S.S. Gannet, which was wrecked in Seaford Bay: ‘On the 14th February, 1882, the steamship Gannet, of Leith, was wrecked in Seaford Bay due to high winds and dense fog.’ (The Sea Gallantry Medal, by R. J. For his gallantry Beattie was also awarded the Lloyd’s Medal for Saving Life at Sea.
Note: Beattie’s Lloyd’s Medal was sold in these rooms on 2 March 2017.
