M.M. London Gazette 2 November 1917.
Thomas Chambers, of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 20 May 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the 99th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, which formed part of 49th (Howitzer) Brigade, 5th Army, in 1918. He was discharged on 17 June 1919.
A medal presentation at Victoria Barracks, Belfast, was reported by The Belfast Telegraph on 24 April 1919, at which nine medals were presented, including the Military Medal to Gunner Thomas Chambers, of 34 (Antrim) Fire Command, Carrickfergus. Chambers is likely therefore to have served pre-war with the Antrim Garrison Artillery, based at Carrickfergus. Whilst the Command Post did not see any action during the Great War, it was used for training purposes and in particular by the 36th Ulster Division. The original command post could accommodate 6 officers and 172 other ranks of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
